Riding Levels 

Achievement Levels - to help encourage goals and to reward determination.  With the completion of each level the student will receive a large rosette ribbon corresponding in color to the level achieved.

The P5 Riding levels and curriculum are trademarked and the property of P5 Equestrian.

Level I – Purple

  1. Groom and Tack up with little assistance 
  2. Mount and dismount showing proper form, with/without mounting block
  3. Lead horse on the ground
  4. Correct position at the walk and halt
  5. Correct position in 2-point position at walk
  6. Able to perform a circle, and reverse at a walk
  7. Name basic horse parts

Level II – Green

  1. Correct position at jog/trot
  2. Correct position at long trot /posting trot changing diagonals when required
  3. Show correct technique backing horse
  4. Able to perform a circle, and reverse at a jog/trot
  5. Jog/trot figure 8
  6. Lope/canter
  7. Name parts of tack

Level III – Black

  1. Groom and tack up independently (smaller students may have help with saddle)
  2. Jog/trot serpentine
  3. Canter on both leads
  4. Turn on the haunches
  5. Lengthen and shorten stride at jog/trot
  6. Correct position in 2-point at jog/trot
  7. Demonstrate correct method of leg wrapping

Level IV – Yellow

  1. Walk, trot over poles
  2. Negotiate a back-thru trail obstacle
  3. Ride without stirrups
  4. Perform simple horsemanship/equitation pattern
  5. Lengthen and shorten stride at lope/canter
  6. Demonstrate correct position in showmanship at halter
  7. Identify different bits and their uses

Level V – Red

  1. Lope/canter figure 8 with simple or flying lead changes
  2. Side pass
  3. Turn on the forehand
  4. Negotiate a gate on horseback
  5. Perform shoulder in and shoulder out at walk and trot
  6. Perform a simple showmanship at halter pattern
  7. Explain 6 illnesses of the horse

Extreme Equestrian Level - Blue   

  1. Serpentine at lope/canter with flying or simple lead changes
  2. Two-track at walk and trot
  3. Perform advanced horsemanship/equitation pattern
  4. Side pass over a pole
  5. Canter over ground pole
  6. Demonstrate proper emergency stopping rein
  7. Name the 5 natural aids and the 5 rein aids

After the completion of all riding levels the student is ready for competition and can enjoy a lifetime of involvement with horses.  Refinement and excellence through continuing education at P5 is recommended.
